With exposure to sun, detergents, and dry environments, the skin's protective barrier is damaged, leading to skin dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity. The problem becomes even greater as we age because the production of the skin's barrier components declines. When the barrier is damaged, water is lost, leading to dry skin, rough skin, and disturbed exfoliation. A damaged barrier also allows entry of irritating materials (such as detergents) into the skin. The barrier resides in the stratum corneum, the thin upper layers of the skin- the part of the skin that we see with our eyes. The barrier consists of cells that are surrounded by lipids, in particular a blend of very specific fatty substances called Ceramides (Ceramides 1, 2, 3, and 6), along with other important lipids (cholesterol and sphingosine). Replacing the lipids that have been lost due to environmental damage and aging can restore barrier function.A mixture of Ceramide 1, Ceramide 2, Ceramide 3, and Ceramide 6, along with cholesterol and sphingosine (plant-derived phytospingosine) creates lipid layers that mimic the natural lipid structure of the stratum corneum.
The Reinforce Ceramide Serum contains this mixture of natural materials. Applying this mixture to skin restores the barrier lipid structure and improves barrier function. With a renewed barrier, the entry of irritating materials into the skin is reduced, resulting in less irritation and sensitivity. The renewed barrier also reduces water loss so the skin is more hydrated, providing less skin dryness and improved exfoliation (natural turnover). In turn, that results in less roughness, and smoother and younger-looking skin. It is important to add that restoring the barrier with natural Ceramides is so effective that it improves even tough difficult skin problems like atopy and eczema.
The Reinforce Ceramide Serum is formulated with humectants that improves skin hydration. The humectant is a small liquid material, and it easily enters the stratum corneum where it binds water to hydrate skin and acts as a lubricant to increase skin flexibility.
